Federal finance minister and world-renowned composer to be honored at Concordia University's fall convocation

MONTREAL/November 4, 1998—

Two distinguished individuals will receive honorary degrees at Concordia's University's fall convocation ceremony to be held tomorrow, Friday, November 20, at 10:00 a.m. , in Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts.

The Honorable Paul Martin, Minister of Finance, and Member of Parliament for Lasalle-…mard, will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. Sworn in as Canada's Finance Minister in 1993, Mr. Martin has also held a number of other professional positions in government and industry. In addition to his professional commitments, he has also been active in a wide range of community and service organizations. Mr. Martin will be the keynote speaker at the convocation ceremony.

An honorary doctorate will also be presented to internationally renowned composer Henryk GÛrecki. Mr. GÛrecki burst onto the international stage in 1989, with the success of his Third Symphony, but his accomplishments have long been respected in the world of music. In his native Poland, Mr. GÛrecki is revered as a symbol of artistic and political integrity.

Following the convocation ceremony, Mr. Martin will meet briefly with journalists in the Place des Arts Green Room. Chris Mota and Evelyne Abitbol of Concordia University's Public Relations Department will meet journalists at the west lobby entrance to the backstage area immediately following the ceremony to escort them to the Green Room.
