Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies bridges the gap

MONTREAL/September 18, 1998—

Concordia University, through its Campaign for a New Millennium, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies.
The Institute became a reality thanks to the generosity of Andrea and Charles Bronfman and the Seagram Company Ltd./La Compagnie Seagram LtÈe., who jointly provided $1 million to the University's Capital Campaign to create this centre which combines academic research with an outreach program serving the Montreal Jewish community .
According to the Institute's acting director, Dr. Norma Joseph, ìConcordia has been doing ground-breaking research on the Canadian Jewish experience. We now have a real opportunity to put our knowledge into practice, to the benefit of the communityî. Students will work within community agencies and associations, through an internship program, while pursuing their research activities.
Some of the funding will be directed to graduate fellowships. ìGraduate work is expensive, and many of our brightest young men and women are unable to pursue higher studies without financial supportî, adds Dr. Joseph.
The Institute will also offer seminars and lectures to the general public. A course titled ìThe Canadian Jewish Experienceî will be taught by Dr. Ira Robinson, in cooperation with the Jewish Public Library beginning in January, 1999.
