The Birks Student Service Centre and Concordia’s Welcome Centre are moving temporarily to make way for an extensive renovation to the space they share on the ground floor of the J.W. McConnell Library (LB) Building.

The Birks Student Service Centre will close at noon on Friday, April 12, and reopen in its temporary new home in Room MB-2.225 of the John Molson School of Business (MB) Building (1450 Guy St.), at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 15.

Concordia’s Welcome Centre will also close April 12 and reopen on April 15 in a new temporary location: Room EV-1.631 of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (EV Building, 1515 Ste-Catherine St. W.).

Although students at Concordia can pay their tuition fees online, they also have the option of paying them at the Birks Student Service Centre. It’s also where they can go to pick up their ID cards, requested letters, and various required forms.

The renovations are the result of a service review, which found that the centre’s services could be improved by changing the physical layout to allow for a more comfortable space to meet with students.

“We have designed a space where students can sit together with one of our staff members to have their needs addressed,” says Brad Tucker, associate vice-president, Student and Enrolment Services. “This will be a considerable improvement over the less personal, counter-based transactions.”

The Welcome Centre, currently located within the Birks Student Service Centre, is where prospective students can go to get information about the university or sign up for a campus tour.

Having a more open and accessible space will allow the Welcome Centre’s staff to carry out their activities more effectively, says Matt Stiegemeyer, director of Recruitment. “These facilities are the front line for the university for a number of services. We want them to reflect what we ultimately consider the quality of the university experience at Concordia.”

The renovations to the Birks Student Service Centre and the Welcome Centre are expected to be completed by mid-August in time for the rush of incoming students enrolled for the fall term.
