Department of Geography, Planning and Environment Lecture
Event type: Conferences & Lectures
Speaker: Dr. Udaya Vepakomma
Forests respond in many ways to disturbances that occur across varying spatial and temporal scales. Canopy opening due to tree mortality accelerates height growth of vegetation within and lateral growth around the opening. Nevertheless, different species may respond differently especially in mixed-wood boreal forests, as the conifers have determinate and the hardwoods have indeterminate growth. These differences may thus limit or enhance the lateral and height growth responses of adult vs regenerating trees of these species. Moreover, there is also some question as to the distance these disturbance effects may extend into the forest interior. Precise knowledge on such forest responses will be critical in refining disturbance-based single or multiple tree silviculture. However, it is still difficult to characterise disturbances and measure height-growth of vegetation over large areas and through time using field or conventional remote sensing methods. I address these issues by developing suitable methods using multi-temporal lidar data over 6 km2 mixed-wood boreal forest in Quebec.

This lecture presents the history of forensic science together with some famous cases ranging from the story of the Poison Umbrella to that of O.J. Simpson.. The lecture concludes with an analysis of several well-known literature and movie thrillers from the chemist's perspective.
