First-year students moving into Concordia residence are required to purchase a meal plan through Chartwells, the on-campus food service provider owned by Compass Group Canada.

But did you know that meal plans are also available for non-resident students, also known as “commuters,” and for faculty and staff?

This year, there are six new meal plan options available to students who aren’t living in Concordia residence.

Plans vary in price, ranging from $50 to spend at any Chartwells location to $928 for five all-you-can-eat dining hall meals a week, which includes another $100 to be used at a Chartwells retail location. Each plan also entitles holders to a Super Savings Card, which gives them access to more savings.

“The $928 Tax Free Plus Meals Plan and the Tax Free Flex Super Savings saves you any applicable taxes on your food purchases,” explains Tazim Mohamed, general manager of the Sir George Williams (SGW) Campus Chartwells. “The Tax Free Flex Super Savings Plan is all money that is placed on your student card where you use your student card as a debit card and you save all taxes on your purchases. With the five per cent super savings discount and the tax discount you can save up to 19 per cent on your purchases.”

Meal plans may be a good option for those who spend most of their day in class or around campus. It saves time that would be spent shopping, cooking, and of course, cleaning up. With three locations on the SGW Campus and five on the Loyola Campus, plan holders can be sure that there is always a food service location nearby.

Chartwells is also committed to providing healthy options for students on the go. In consultation with registered dietitians and chefs, Balanced Choices, Compass's nutrition and wellness program, was created. The Balanced Choices program aims to help students ‘Eat, Learn, and Live’ by promoting healthy food and physical activity.

As part of the program, healthier food options are labelled with a Balanced Choices sticker, and vegetarian and vegan options are also available.

Students and employees interested in purchasing meal plans can do so on the Dine on Campus Concordia website, by calling Chartwells Concordia at 514-848-2424, ext. 5247, or by stopping in at the Chartwells office, Room H-747 of the Henry F. Hall Building (SGW Campus).
