From infrastructure systems to biodiversity, several new Concordia researchers are using their distinct expertise to shed light on cities-related issues.
Joining Ursula Eicker, Concordia’s newly appointed Canada Excellence Research Chair in Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Cities, five tenure-track cities cluster hires will further consolidate the university’s leadership in the rapidly changing field of municipal matters.
“Developing seamless integrated approaches to research while leveraging technology, design and planning is one of the great challenges of the 21st century,” says Graham Carr, provost and vice-president, Academic.
“As part of our Strategic Directions Game Plan, we are pleased to welcome Jing Hu, Alice Jarry, Chunyan Lai, Mohamed Ouf and Carly Ziter — five extremely collaborative individuals whose research and creative activities will help meet the economic, social and environmental demands of present and future generations.”
Here are the five new cities cluster hires and the research programs that they will develop:
Philosophy
Defining the concept of “humanicité” for smart, sustainable cities and communities, Hu will examine the role of emotions in moral theory and how they can be changed and shaped in order to become virtues.
Design and Computation Arts
Jarry will explore ways in which design can be optimized for environmentally-responsive cities.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
In her work on the electrification of transport, Lai will develop methods to support the design of more efficient, compact, lightweight and reliable motor drives.
Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Ouf will study how buildings can be designed in order to predict occupant preferences that maximize comfort and minimize energy consumption.
Biology
Ziter will look at ways in which green spaces in and around our cities can be managed to provide benefits to people, while also conserving biodiversity.
