Concordia University awards honorary doctorates to nine distinguished individuals

Governor General of Canada among the recipients

Montreal, May 4, 2016 – Concordia University will present honorary doctorates to nine individuals who have made significant contributions in a range of fields as innovators, scholars, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. They will receive their honorary doctorates during spring convocation ceremonies, taking place June 6 through June 8 in Place des Arts’ Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier (175 Ste-Catherine St. W.). The honorands will join more than 6,300 students from all four faculties as well as the School of Graduate Studies, who will be receiving their diplomas.

The honorands are :

Joan Wallach Scott - In recognition of her scholarly contribution to the understanding of gender history

Joan Wallach Scott is a professor emerita at the School of Social Science in the Institute for Advanced Study, founding director of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University, and founding editor of History of the Present: a Journal of Critical History.

Sherry Turkle - For her contribution to a deeper understanding of our relationship with technology, particularly computer technology

Sherry Turkle is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology; director of the Initiative on Technology and Self in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Program in Science, Technology and Society; and best-selling author of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston - In recognition of his distinguished public service

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston is the Governor General of Canada; former principal of McGill University, former president of the University of Waterloo and the author or co-author of more than 25 books.

Nora Volkow - In recognition of her significant accomplishments in the scientific study of drug addiction

Nora Volkow is the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health; former director of Nuclear Medicine, chair of the Medical Department and associate director for Life Sciences at the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Arlene Dickinson - For her entrepreneurial acumen and her generous mentoring

Arlene Dickinson is the CEO of Venture Communications and YouInc.com, long-time venture capitalist on CBC Television’s Dragons’ Den and The Big Decision and the author of Persuasion and All In.

Garrett Herman - For his outstanding contributions to the study of Darwin’s life and work

Garret Herman is the Chair and CEO of Loewen Ondaatje McCutcheon Ltd.; former member of the Consular Corps of Ontario; Chair and Founder of the Galapagos Conservancy of Canada, formerly the Charles Darwin Foundation Canada.

Pierre Lassonde - For his engineering expertise and philanthropic spirit

Pierre Lassonde is co-founder of Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation, former chair of the World Gold Council, chair of the board of the Canada Council for the Arts, chair of the board of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Aaron Fish - For his business management skills and support of university engineering programs

Aaron Fish is founder and former chair and CEO of Unican Security Systems Ltd. and the creator of the first electrically supervised mechanical push-button lock.

James Shavick - For his contribution to the development of Canadian film and television production and outspoken advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ community

James Shavick is CEO of Shavick Entertainment, CEO of OUTtv; former director of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of British Columbia.
