Professor Simpkins has taught Retailing, Marketing Management, Business Communications, and Contemporary Business Thinking. He currently teaches The Environment of World Business. With colleague Dr. Jordan Le Bel, in 2004 Professor Simpkins launched an innovative online course titled Marketing Yourself. Since its introduction, more than 20,000 students have enrolled in it.

In 2005, the course received the Canadian Association for Distance Education's award for excellence and innovation in instructional design. In 2012, Professors Simpkins and Le Bel co-authored an extensive set of Marketing Yourself course notes which replaced the textbook of the same title which was published in 2007. Professor Simpkins is also the Academic Director of the Marketing Co-op Program and coaches JMSB teams in a number of inter-university competitions including the Defi Communications, Defi Marketing  Happening Marketing and Commerce Games. In 2004 he was the recipient of the JMSB Distinguished Teaching Award.

In addition to his teaching, co-op and coaching activities, Professor Simpkins has been a consultant in the automotive, e-commerce, retailing and not-for-profit sectors and is the Past President of Montreal-based Youth Employment Services.

Prior to joining the JMSB as a full-time faculty member in 1983, he held senior management positions with a number of leading corporations including the MacLaren Lintas advertising agency.
