Athletic Therapy

The Athletic Therapy program addresses the knowledge and practical skills required to pursue careers devoted to the health care of physically active individuals by utilizing various techniques in the prevention, immediate care and rehabilitation of injuries. Your educational experience will include: musculoskeletal and postural evaluation, equipment fitting and selection, conditioning programs, prophylactic and supportive taping, injury assessment, basic emergency life support, first aid, preparation for entrance into appropriate health care delivery systems, rehabilitative techniques, modality therapy and utilization of techniques facilitating a safe return to active living.


Specialization Exercise Science/Athletic Therapy — 72 credits

Provides essential course work and internship experiences necessary to prepare students to become Certified Athletic Therapists. This program is one of six Athletic Therapy programs accredited by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) in Canada and it is the only accredited program in Quebec and Eastern Canada. Students are trained as health care professionals specializing in prevention, emergency care and the rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries that are generally sustained during sporting events or as a result of daily physical activities.

Department of Exercise Science

The Department of Exercise Science is committed to teaching and research in the areas of exercise, health, and physical activity with an emphasis on the specialty areas of athletic therapy and clinical exercise physiology. Located in the Richard J. Renaud Science Pavilion on the Loyola campus, the department offers state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, learning and research. Students are given a unique university experience with knowledgeable and dynamic faculty and advanced laboratory equipment, as well as a valuable student learning laboratory.

The curriculum permits students to explore the scientific processes that occur when healthy individuals and those with a variety of impairments, disabilities, and disease states engage in activities that promote the healthiest possible lifestyle. Through lectures, laboratory instruction and internship experiences, students acquire the knowledge and skills to assess, evaluate and design the most appropriate exercise programs to rehabilitate, improve or maintain the health and functional performance of people ranging from those with chronic disease conditions to elite athletes.
