You are eligible to participate in the Concordia Paid Sick Leave Plan if you are:
- a full-time, permanent employee; and
- a member of an eligible employee group.
When and how to enrol
You automatically enrol once you become eligible to join the plan. You have no forms to complete.
When coverage begins
Coverage begins on the date your permanent employment begins.
Benefits
If you are totally disabled due to illness or injury, the Paid Sick Leave Plan will continue to pay your regular monthly earnings for up to four months.
Please note that certain exclusions apply.
Benefit offsets
Disability benefits payable by the University will be reduced by any benefits you may be entitled to receive in respect of your disability from:
Participation in other Concordia plans
While you receive benefits from this plan, your participation in other parts of the University’s Benefit Program will continue. This means that:
- your group insurance coverage will continue;
- you will continue to make regular benefit contributions through payroll deductions, where required; and
- your pension will continue to accumulate.
Disabled again?
If you return to work full–time after a disability and become disabled again, the second disability period will be considered a continuation of the first only if:
- your disability recurs within three months of your return to work and is for the same or related cause; or
- your disability recurs within one month of your return to work and is for an unrelated cause.
In these instances, benefits will be paid up to four months for both periods of disability combined.
Should a disability recur under any other circumstance, you will be entitled to benefits under the Paid Sick Leave Plan for up to another four months.
Cost of coverage
Concordia currently pays the entire cost of coverage under the Paid Sick Leave Plan.
What is taxable
The sick leave benefits received when you are disabled are taxable as income.
Disability and pregnancy
If your disability results from a pregnancy–related illness or maternity complication, you may be entitled to benefits provided you were not on maternity leave when your disability began.
Exclusions
No benefits will be paid for a disability occurring during an unpaid leave of absence or during any period while you are outside Canada or the United States. If you become disabled while you are outside these countries, your disability will be recognized on your date of return.
Claims
- You do not need to file a claim to receive benefits from the Paid Sick Leave Plan.
- Simply notify your Department Supervisor.
- When requested, you will need to provide Benefits Services with satisfactory medical proof of your disability within five days of the date your disability began.
