Amounts of coverage
In the event of accidental death
Your coverage
Up to $750,000, in units of $10,000.
In addition, the plan will pay a monthly amount equal to 1% of your coverage to your surviving spouse or to your eligible dependent children (who will share the amount equally). Instalments are payable from the date of your death, for up to 6 months, to a total of $10,000.
If you also cover your family
Your eligible dependents will automatically be covered as follows:
| Your spouse | |
| If you have dependent children | 50% of your coverage for accidental death |
| If you do not have dependent children | 60% of your coverage for accidental death |
| Each dependent child | |
| If you have a spouse | 15% of your coverage for accidental death |
| If you do not have a spouse | 20% of your coverage for accidental death |
Example
For instance, if you choose to cover yourself for $200,000 and wish to cover your family as well, they would be covered as follows in the event of accidental death:
| Your spouse | |
| If you have dependent children | $200,000 x 50% = $100,000 |
| If you do not have dependent children | $200,000 x 60% = $120,000 |
| Each dependent child | |
| If you have a spouse | $200,000 x 15% = $30,000 |
| If you do not have a spouse | $200,000 x 20% = $40,000 |
In addition, if your spouse dies, the plan will pay a monthly amount equal to 1% of your coverage to you or to your eligible dependent children. Instalments are payable from the date of your spouse's death, for up to 6 months, to a total of $10,000.
In the event of accidental injury
Should you or an eligible dependent suffer a serious accidental injury, benefits from the Optional Accident Insurance Plan may be payable.
For each covered injury, the plan pays a percentage of the amount payable for accidental death, as follows, provided the covered loss occurs within 365 days of the date of the accident:
| Injury | Percentage payable |
| Loss of: | |
| All toes of one foot | 33 1/3% |
| Hearing in one ear | 66 2/3% |
| Thumb and index finger of the same hand | 66 2/3% |
| Four fingers of one hand | 66 2/3% |
| Entire sight in one eye | 100% |
| One hand or foot or its use | 100% |
| One arm or leg or its use | 100% |
| Speech or hearing both ears | 100% |
| Total paralysis of: | |
| Both upper and both lower limbs (quadriplegia) | 200%* |
| Both lower limbs (paraplegia) of: | 200%* |
| Upper and lower limbs of one side of the body (hemiplega) | 200%* |
| * The benefit payable will be equal to 100% rather than 200% if you die with 90 days after the date of the accident. | |
Exposure and disappearance
Should you or an eligible dependent be unavoidably exposed to the elements as a result of an accident and consequently suffer a covered loss, the plan will provide benefits for that loss.
If you are in a transportation vehicle that:
- disappears;
- is forced to land;
- is standed;
- sinks; or
- is wrecked;
and you are not found within one year of the incident, you will be considered to have died. The plan will pay benefits accordingly.
This also applies to your covered dependents.
