Nadia Myre (MFA 02) took home one of the most distinguished awards in contemporary Canadian art last night.

The $50,000 Sobey Art Award is conferred annually to an established artist aged 40 or under. All nominees must have exhibited work in a public or commercial art gallery in the previous 18 months.

Myre is the fourth winner from Concordia: she joins Raphaëlle de Groot (2012), Daniel Barrow (2010) and Michel de Broin (2007).

Since the Sobey’s inception in 2002, 20 of the university’s students, visiting artists and alumni have been longlisted. Myre, a visual artist and Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, made the list four times — in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

She explores questions of identity and loss. Her work is on permanent exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the National Gallery of Canada.

The Sobey Art Foundation and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia announced the 2014 finalists in June. They are divided by geographical location: Evan Lee from the West Coast and the Yukon; Neil Farber and Michael Dumontier from the Prairies and Northern Canada; Chris Curreri from Ontario; Graeme Patterson from Atlantic Canada; and Nadia Myre From Quebec. The four runners-up receive $10,000 each.
