Concordia awards 9 new honorary doctorates

The distinguished recipients include the Governor General of Canada, a best-selling author and an entrepreneur from Dragons’ Den

The countdown to Concordia’s 2016 spring convocation ceremonies has begun.

This year, from June 6 to 8, more than 6,300 students from all four faculties and the School of Graduate Studies take to the stage in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Montreal’s Place des Arts, to receive their diplomas.

Nine highly distinguished honorands are also joining the Class of 2016. Concordia will present honorary doctorates to individuals who have made significant contributions to a range of fields as innovators, scholars, entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

Joan Wallach Scott

In recognition of her scholarly contribution to the understanding of gender history

Joan Wallach Scott is a professor emerita at the School of Social Science in the Institute for Advanced Study; founding director of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University; and founding editor of History of the Present: A Journal of Critical History.

Sherry Turkle

Sherry Turkle

For her contribution to a deeper understanding of our relationship with technology, particularly computer technology

Sherry Turkle is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology; director of the Initiative on Technology and Self in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Program in Science, Technology, and Society; and the best-selling author of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age.

Right Honourable David Johnston

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston

In recognition of his distinguished public service

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston is the Governor General of Canada, former principal of McGill University, former president of the University of Waterloo and the author or co-author of more than 25 books.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston addresses Concordia’s Faculty of Arts and Science at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6.

Nora Volkow

Nora Volkow

In recognition of her significant accomplishments in the scientific study of drug addiction

Nora Volkow is director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health; former director of Nuclear Medicine, chair of the Medical Department and associate director for Life Sciences at the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Arlene Dickinson

Arlene Dickinson

For her entrepreneurial acumen and generous mentoring

Arlene Dickinson is CEO of Venture Communications and YouInc.com, long-time venture capitalist on CBC Television’s Dragons’ Den and The Big Decision and the author of Persuasion and All In.

Garrett Herman

Garrett Herman

For his outstanding contributions to the study of Charles Darwin’s life and work

Garrett Herman is chair and CEO of Loewen Ondaatje McCutcheon Ltd.; former member of the Consular Corps of Ontario; and chair and founder of the Galapagos Conservancy Canada (GCC), formerly the Charles Darwin Foundation Canada.

For his engineering expertise and philanthropic spirit

Pierre Lassonde is co-founder of Franco-Nevada Corporation, former chair of the World Gold Council, chair of the board of the Canada Council for the Arts and chair of the board of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Aaron Fish

Aaron Fish

For his business-management skills and support of university engineering programs

Aaron Fish is the creator of the first electrically supervised mechanical push-button lock, and founder, former chair and CEO of Unican Security Systems Ltd.

Aaron Fish addresses Concordia’s Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8.

James Shavick

James Shavick

For his contribution to the development of Canadian film and television production and outspoken advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ community

James Shavick is CEO of Shavick Entertainment, CEO of OUTtv and former director of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of British Columbia.

James Shavick addresses Concordia’s Faculty of Fine Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8.
