Looking to find that gift that's not quite like the others? Or perhaps you have a vegan-hunting-trophy-sized hole on your living room décor...

Every fall, HAUT + FORT / LOUD + CLEAR: The Holiday Design Market provides a rare opportunity to shop the wares of established and emerging Quebec designers.

The second Concordia-hosted iteration takes place this weekend, on November 21 and 22, in the atrium of the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex (EV).

“The accent is on local design,” says Concordia alumna and market organizer Anne Thomas (BFA 87), who notes there will be 45 creators in attendance.

“We’ll have furniture, jewellery, accessories and artisanal handcrafted items.”

There will also be food items for sale: gourmet coffee, local hot sauce and specialty cocktail syrups.

From 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, alumna Vanessa Sicotte (BComm, 02) — the mastermind behind the Damask & Dentelle design blog and web directory — will be signing copies of her new book, 300 trucs pour une déco parfaitement imparfaite.

On Sunday, from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m., children aged five to nine are invited to participate in an architecture workshop, run by the folks from kumulus.ca. They’ll get to explore modern home designs, and create their own unique structures using sugar cubes.

“On top of having a lot of creative fun, the children will build a whole neighbourhood of their own!” Thomas says.

Kumulus will run an architecture workshop for children aged five to nine years old.

This year, Alvéole, a local urban beekeeping group, will be selling organic honey made on the island of Montreal. Non-profit organization Cuisines collectives du grand plateau will be raising money for its activities and cooking workshops, which promote food security and access.

The market was born out of a desire to help support local designers and highlight the forefront of modern design in Quebec, explains Thomas.

“Montreal Design Month is in May. Outside of that there aren’t many opportunities for designers to showcase their work and interact with the community,” she adds.

“I’m very pleased that Concordia is hosting this event, especially as a graduate,” says Thomas, herself a practicing designer and founder of Montreal-based Thomas Design and Communication.

The fourth annual HAUT + FORT / LOUD + CLEAR: The Holiday Design Market runs from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, and from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, in the atrium of Concordia's
Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex. Admission is free.
