Conversations in Contemporary Art Presents Tema Stauffer

Tema Stauffer’s work examines the social, economic, and psychological landscape of American spaces.  American Stills (2000 - 2009) explores themes of solitude, mystery and beauty. Primarily shot on road trips in the United States, the photographs create a sense of tension between what is present and visible, and what is absent and implied. The Ballad of Sad Young Men (2008) portrays the vulnerability and uncertainty of adolescents in Binghamton, New York during the onset of the recession. Her most recent portrait series, Paterson (2009 - 2014), documents residents of a post-industrial city in New Jersey. Paterson is a historic city near the Great Falls of the Passaic River, once prosperous from its mills and silk manufacturing industry. Founded in 1791 as the nation’s first planned industrial city, Paterson offered jobs to an immigrant labor force in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city is the setting of novels by Junot Diaz and John Updike, and has inspired the work of William Carlos Williams, Allen Ginsberg, and George Tice.  The third largest city in New Jersey, Paterson began to decline economically during the 1960s and 70s, and has continued to face high rates of unemployment. These straightforward, realist, and classically composed photographs of Paterson’s diverse community concentrate on faces and the depth of human experience that is spoken through them.

Tema Stauffer is an American photographer based in Montreal. Her work has been exhibited at Sasha Wolf, Daniel Cooney, and Jen Bekman galleries in New York, as well as galleries and institutions internationally. She was awarded an AOL 25 for 25 Grant for innovation in the arts in 2010 for her combined work as an artist, curator, and writer. She received the 2012 WIP–LTI/Lightside Individual Project Grant, a 2014 CCNY Darkroom Residency, and was a finalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2013 at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at Concordia University.

Admission for all Conversations in Contemporary Art events is FREE and open to the general public. Seating is first come, first serve.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Réalisée principalement lors de voyages en voiture aux États-Unis, cette série de photos évoque une tension entre la présence et l’absence, entre le visible et l’inexprimé. The Ballad of Sad Young Men (2008) dépeint la vulnérabilité et l’incertitude d’adolescents de Binghamton, dans l’état de New York, au début de la récession. Sa plus récente série, Paterson (2009 2014), documente l’existence de résidents d’une ville postindustrielle du New Jersey. Cité historique située près des grandes chutes de la rivière Passaic, Paterson était jadis reconnue pour ses usines et ses manufactures de soie. Fondée en 1791 en tant que première ville industrielle planifiée du pays, Paterson offrait des emplois à une main-d’œuvre immigrante au XIXe siècle ainsi qu’au début du XXe. La cité a servi de cadre à des romans de Junot Diaz et de John Updike, en plus d’inspirer l’œuvre de William Carlos Williams, d’Allen Ginsberg et de George Tice. Troisième plus grande ville de l’État du New Jersey, Paterson a amorcé un déclin économique au cours des années 1960 et 1970. Depuis, la collectivité est aux prises avec des taux de chômage élevés. Francs, réalistes et de composition classique, les portraits qui forment cette série reflètent le visage de la communauté diversifiée de Paterson tout en évoquant la profondeur de l’expérience humaine.

Photographe établie à Montréal, Tema Stauffer est originaire des États-Unis. Son œuvre a fait l’objet d’expositions chez les galeristes new-yorkais Sasha Wolf, Daniel Cooney et Jen Bekman, ainsi que dans d’autres établissements et galeries à l’international. En 2010, Mme Stauffer a remporté une bourse à l’innovation dans les arts 25 for 25 d’AOL, pour son travail d’artiste, de commissaire et d’écrivaine. Elle a reçu en 2012 la bourse WIP LTI/Lightside aux fins de projet individuel et a obtenu en 2014 une résidence du City College of New York (CCNY Darkroom Residency). Elle comptait en outre parmi les finalistes de l’exposition concours Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition de 2013, à la Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Tema Stauffer est professeure adjointe de photographie à l’Université Concordia.

Tous les événements du programme Conversations in Contemporary Art sont gratuits et ouverts au public. Les sièges sont assignés selon le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. Les portes ouvrent à 17h30.
