COMMUNITY ART STUDIO: METHODS AND MATERIALS (3 Credits)

(with guest Dr. Pat Allen, author of Art Is A Way of Knowing)

Class:             May 7- June 13 

Meet Wednesdays and Thursdays 1pm -5pm and one required Friday (June 13).

Class meets over a 6 week period with two weeks without classes in order to conduct 15 hours of engaged service learning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This experiential course is for artists, teachers, therapists and others interested in learning nonclinical aspects of art therapy as developed within free andwelcoming public settings. The course will be taught in an active communitystudio in order to demonstrate how to set up small and sustainable spaces for community building. Students will learn through service learning and art making the theory, methods and materials used to create public art homeplaces thatserve as a practical way to take art as a form of healing into neighbourhoods. Students must be comfortable with using art materials and be able to travel(metro/walk/drive) off campus. Students will develop an understanding of art as therapy methodology through experiential methods including art making and engaged service learning culminating in a public presentation. Each student is expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience and integrate his/her experiential learning with the course theory and related literature.
