Institute for Community Development
Over the last 17 years Concordia’s Institute for Community Development has been central in helping the University meet its mission of being a 'université engagée' - addressing societal challenges that are complex, difficult and yet urgent. Above and beyond the excellence of Concordia’s teaching and research, and the success of our students, this requires a commitment towards democratic society as a whole. Concordia continues to foster critical spirits and the emergence of engaged, informed citizens, preparing them for a more activist citizenship and civic engagement.
The Institute has promoted and developed innovative programming –both credit and non-credit - that is renowned in North America and that has caught the imagination of the public. The University of the Streets Café Program and Experiential & Service learning courses are specific examples, bringing the best of the University to the community and the best of the community to the University. Complementing our more traditional university programming the Institute’s initiatives, done in collaboration with academic and community partners, are developing free, open, egalitarian, and inclusive spaces where citizens, students, and faculty are able to imagine together solutions to problems facing our community and society.
