Conversations in Contemporary Art presents Diane Morin

Born in 1974 in Saint-Joseph-de-Kamouraska, Diane Morin lives and works in Montréal. She studied in Rivière-du-Loup and then at Université Laval, graduating from Concordia University in Montréal with a Master's degree in Open Media in 2003. She has been creating installations using kinetic art and new media since 1998. She works with light, sound, drawings and robotics to make in situ installations in which kinetic, sound and light events take place. She uses different procedures and apparatuses to make these events apparent and to preserve traces of them: photograms, video recordings, sound amplification, projected shadows. 

Her work has been seen in solo and group shows in Finland, Norway, Montréal and elsewhere in Canada. In addition, she has carried out artistic residencies under the SUMU artists in residency program at the Arte artists' association in Turku, Finland (2011), the independent study program at the Konsthögskolan Valand in Göteborg, Sweden (2009-10), and in the Finnish Artists Studio Foundation in Espoo, Finland (2008). In 2012 her work was exhibited in the 6th edition of the Manif d'Art, organized around the topic Machine. At CIRCA in 2013 she developed the automatic projection apparatus Imbrication (machine à réduire le temps), a "shadow theatre" in which she explored space, the object and time. In June 2013, at the CLARK gallery, she presented Le grand calculateur I (apprendre à compter), a kinetic installation based on a system of mechanical relays and binary calculation used in computer technology. This work received a special mention as part of VIDA 15.0, Art and Artificial Life International Awards. 

In 2010, Morin received the Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award in Media Arts. She is the recipient of the first MNBAQ Contemporary Art Award given in collaboration with the RBC Foundation.

Elle a étudié à Rivière-du-Loup puis à l’Université Laval, et sort diplômée en 2003 de l’Université Concordia à Montréal avec une maîtrise en beaux-arts (open media). Depuis 1998, Diane Morin réalise des installations liant sa pratique à l’art cinétique et aux nouveaux médias. Elle travaille avec la lumière, le son, le dessin et la robotique pour créer des installations in situ dans lesquelles ont lieu des événements cinétiques, sonores et lumineux. L’artiste utilise différents procédés et dispositifs afin de rendre ces événements apparents et en préserver des traces : photogramme, enregistrement vidéo, amplification audio, projection d’ombres. Elle a exposé individuellement et collectivement à Montréal, ailleurs au Canada et à l’étranger. En outre, elle a participé à des résidences dans le cadre du programme SUMU d’artistes en résidence, à la Artists’ Association Arte, à Turku, en Finlande (2011), de l’independent study program, à la Konsthögskolan Valand, à Göteborg en Suède (2009- 2010), et à l’atelier de la Fondation finlandaise de résidences d’artistes à Espoo, en Finlande (2008). En 2012, elle participait à la 6e édition de la Manif d’Art, sous le thème de Machine. Au centre CIRCA, en 2013, l’artiste a élaboré un dispositif de projection automatisé, Imbrication (machine à réduire le temps), un « théâtre d’ombres » dans lequel l’artiste livre une recherche sur l’espace, l’objet et la durée. En juin 2013, à la Galerie CLARK, elle présentait Le grand calculateur I (apprendre à compter), une installation cinétique basée sur un système de relais mécaniques et la logique du calcul binaire utilisé en informatique. Cette oeuvre a reçu une mention spéciale à l'occasion de VIDA 15.0, Art and Artificial Life International Awards. En 2010, Morin recevait, dans la discipline Arts médiatiques, le Prix Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton, décerné par le Conseil des arts du Canada et soulignant les réalisations exceptionnelles d'artistes canadiens parvenus à mi-carrière. Elle est la première lauréate du nouveau Prix en art actuel du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec remis en collaboration avec la Fondation RBC.
