A new permanent exhibition space will be opening at the Cedars Cancer Centre.

Art of AdversityA new permanent exhibition space called ‘Us, Connecting through Art’’ will be opening at the Cedars Cancer Centre.  It will showcase artwork year-round by oncology patients, their caregivers, and staff.  In the lead up to Breast Cancer Awareness month, which takes place in October, we invite everyone to join us at the launch of this gallery which was made possible by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant.

Launch event schedule:

1-4     Open art-making for all

5-7    Opening reception

Speakers: Gwen Nacos, Dr. Virginia Lee, Dr. Rosemary Reilly, Dr. Manuel Borod, Kate Laux  MA, ATPQ

Keynote speaker: Pierre Plante Ph.D. ATPQ, Psychologist and art therapist, Professor, Psychology Department, UQAM

7-8     Open art-making for all

This permanent gallery will be continuously refreshed with new works.  Therefore, we invite patients who have participated in the Cedars CanSupport’s open studio, art therapy sessions or have made art independently to submit their  artwork on topics related to hope, growth, duality, reconciliation and support.

The gallery is on the RC and S1 entrance of the Cedars Cancer Centre.  Additional exhibitions in conjunction with this launch will be taking place at La Ruche d’Art in St. Henri and at Benny Library in Notre-Dame-des-Graces.

The arts have been shown to be an effective tool in dealing with adversity, both in nontherapeutic and therapeutic ways—whether providing individuals with the opportunity for self-discovery and empowerment or developing new ways of expressing emotions and reducing anxiety and increasing well-being.
