ABSTRACT

Railway is arguably the most efficient ground transportation means. While the railway traffic has increased over the years, extensions of railway systems are rare because they require huge investments from railway company. Accordingly, the railway companies are often operating freight trains in a system that is close to saturation. Another issue with railway companies is the fuel cost which represents a significant portion of operating freight trains. To study these two issues, in this research project, we first build a simulation to evaluate the capacity of the railway network and efficiency of the current train operations. Secondly, for the train fuel consumption problem, we build a two-phase optimization model which turns out to be scalable. We also plan to study the crew cost which also plays an important role in train operation expenses.
