Hazardous material incident or spill

 

Hazardous materials include chemicals, bio-hazardous waste and radioactive material. Any incident or spill involving hazardous material must be reported. In the event of a spill, release or accidental exposure:

  1. Advise and warn co-workers.
  2. If necessary, evacuate the area immediately.
  3. Do not touch the hazardous material, unless you have received spill response training from Environmental Health and Safety.
  4. Notify Security at 3717 or 514 848-3717
  5. Providing the following information:
    1. Name of hazardous material.
    2. Quantity involved.
    3. Related health risks and precautions to be taken.
  6. Provide Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or appropriate documentation.
  7. If necessary, begin appropriate decontamination of persons exposed. Assist Security or the Chemical Spill Resource Person as required.

Be prepared

All hazardous materials users should be trained on proper use and storage of hazardous materials, including proper procedures for preventing and responding to spills. If you work with hazardous materials and have not received training, contact Environmental Health and Safety.
