For her emotionally charged stories executed with a film-like quality, Anita Anand, BA 85, BEd 88, recently brought home a 2015 Quebec Writers’ Federation (QWF) Literary Award.

Anand’s novel Swing in the House and Other Stories (Véhicule Press) garnered the Concordia University First Book Prize — one of five awards that recognize English writers in Quebec. Winners were announced at the QWF’s gala on November 18.

“It felt right!” she says of the accolade. “It’s fitting that a Concordian would be up for a prize sponsored by the university.”

Anand’s short story collection features rocky marriages, feuding siblings and racism — informed by her experiences as an Indo-Canadian.

“The title story was written 11 years ago,” says Anand, an English as a second language teacher by day. “I would take leave each summer to work on it.”

Anand’s Concordia connection runs deep. Her mother, Kailash Anand, taught at the university’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics for 37 years until her retirement.

A third generation of Anands are also Concordians. “My son Joseph studied athletic therapy. He graduated in 2013. My daughter Saskia is a graduate student in psychology,” says Anand.

Her advice to aspiring writers? “Read!” she says. “Also, don’t be afraid to set your work aside and go back to it later.”

Anand isn’t the only Concordian to enjoy QWF glory this year. David McGimpsey, BA 88, MA 90, was recognized with the A.M. Klein Poetry Prize for Asbestos Heights. Five other Concordia graduates made the list of QWF finalists.

Each QWF honour comes with a $2,000 award.
