Dana Velan, BFA 88, says that one of the greatest joys of immersing herself in her artistic endeavours is that moment when she gets to share her passion and vision with the world.

“The reality is artists work in isolation, but then we rely on someone else to show our work,” she says. “It was always important for me to show and share my art because of all the time I spend working alone in the studio.”

Velan is getting that opportunity: the drawings from her Fire project are being featured at the FUOCO exhibition in Sulbiate, Italy. The fire-themed exhibition — organized by HEART: Pulsazioni Culturali in conjunction with Expo Milano 2015 — runs from April 11 to April 30.

Velan is no stranger to exhibitions. Her art has been displayed at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac in Frontenac, Que., the Victoria Hall Community art gallery in Westmount, Que., and Dawson College in Montreal. The FUOCO exhibition in Italy is the latest step in an artistic journey driven by Velan’s personal struggles and challenges.

“My work is inspired from my experience of moving to Montreal from Czechoslovakia in 1968,” she says. “I had a suicide in the family and that has also had a huge influence on my drawings.”

Velan’s art depicts landscapes and natural phenomena — water, earth and fire — in series, as she explores issues of belonging, identity and vulnerability. Her latest work includes Nebula (2014) and Legendless (2012). Her drawings are executed either through ink and watercolour or oil sticks on Mylar.

Although her time in her native country will forever shape her artistic expressions, Velan does not overlook the impact of her travels to South Africa, Australia and Iceland.

“Iceland has such a beautiful and interesting landscape because it’s very raw there — the contrast between colours is amazing,” Velan says. “Over there, the colour blue is this beautiful, glacial blue, and all of it is just very inspiring for an artist.”

Inspiration and dedication are at the heart of Velan’s art. Yet she looks back with amusement at the odd circumstances surrounding her exhibition in Italy.

As she was completing her Fire project, she attended a show with a similar theme in the United States, and she couldn’t help but dwell on what seemed like a missed opportunity.

“I thought that my drawings would have fit in there so perfectly,” she recalls. “I missed that show but then I was invited to the show in Italy, so it’s very encouraging.”

Velan says her latest milestone won’t make her complacent — she will soon be back in her studio paving the road in a personal journey she hopes to continue sharing with others.
