Documentary demystifies non-traditional families
Don’t miss the bilingual documentary To My Children. À Mes Enfants. from director George I. Karkour, BComm (mktg.) 11, GrDip (comm. studies) 13. The film explores the challenges — and joy — experienced by families in Montreal’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning (LGBTQ) community.
“I wanted to find and film inspiring LGBT family models that would give hope to the 14-year-old me,” Karkour’s says.
The 37-minute work features interviews with same-sex and transsexual parents and their children, as well as with experts from community organizations GRIS-Montreal (Groupe de Recherche et d’Intervention Sociale) and LGBTQ Family Coalition. They agree that while Quebec has been progressive in dealing with LGBTQ issues, further education is vital to help the greater society accept non-traditional households.
OUTtv recently agreed to broadcast the documentary, thanks to a Concordia connection. “This is incredible because it shows just how Concordia helps its alumni,” Karkour says.
