While the majority of students were enjoying their summer break, the staff at Concordia’s Student Success Centre (SSC) have been hard at work fulfilling a move long in the making.
In July, the SSC left its old haunts behind for a brand new — and fully renovated — home on the seventh floor of the Henry F. Hall Building (H-745).
Previously spread across various locations, the centre’s former spaces were getting too cramped for its growing programming, says Laura Mitchell, SSC director and executive director of Student Services. A change was in order.
“Concordia provided us with a bigger, brighter space in an area where thousands of students pass every day,” Mitchell says, noting the new locale boasts many a welcoming spot where students can get their work done.
“It’s spacious, light, motivating and serene, with great places to sit down and study. Plus, it’s on the same floor as People’s Potato and the Concordia Student Union.”
All of the centre’s resource rooms — Writing Centre, Math Centre, Student Success Resource Room and workshop rooms — are now readily accessible in one spot. The exception is the Student Advocacy Office, which will remain in the Guy-De Maisonneuve Building (GM-320).
A lot of careful thought and planning went into the move. From conceptualizing the space to logistics, the SSC team worked closely with Facilities Management and external architects to design a space that best fit their purpose — to help students succeed.
“It has all the little touches that make it both modern and comfortable for students, such as café-style chairs and tables in the new Student Success Resource Room, and flexible, movable workshop tables with plugs for charging devices,” Mitchell says.
