Mélodie Le Siège (BA 10) is passionate about plant-based cuisine and sustainability.

As the #CUseenby Instagram curator for July, she is excited to highlight Concordia’s sustainability practices in creative ways, as well as share information about local green eateries and establishments.

“There are so many amazing initiatives led by Sustainable Concordia, including the Dish Project, the Centre for Creative Reuse, and Waste Not, Want Not,” she says.

Le Siège is a social media and multimedia producer at Concordia and has called the university her second home since 2006.

While pursuing her degree in communications studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science, LeSège also minored in computation arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts and took several marketing courses at the John Molson School of Business.

Spending time in three different faculties was a valuable experience, says Le Siège, because each has its own approach and culture. After graduating, she worked in the Communication Studies and Journalism (CJ) Building media depot from 2011 to 2014.

“I really appreciated that opportunity because I met so many talented students and had my summers off to travel, work on creative video projects and create a blog,” she says.

Over the past two years, members of the community have been invited to capture their vision of the university and share it with Concordia’s Instagram followers, using the hashtag #CUseenby.

‘#CUseenby is a wonderful initiative that I couldn’t pass up!’

Why did you want to be Concordia's Instagram curator?

I wanted to reach a new community on social media. Concordia is such a vibrant place and I love how the university’s Instagram feed reflects that.

What are three or four of your favourite Instagram accounts?

@odilejp — I am crazy about food photography, so I love Odile Joly-Petit’s Instagram. She is an extremely talented food stylist and a passionate vegan. I’ve seen her feed grow to more than 34,900 followers over the last few years with quality content and gorgeous photography. She also seems really genuine. Even though she has loads of followers, she still takes time to answer your comments with thoughtful remarks.

@valises_et_gourmandises — Aryane is another plant-based foodie originally from Montreal. I like her feed because it has gorgeous food photography mixed in with the perfect amount of travel. When I’m looking for food ideas combined with travel tips, I’ll browse through her images.

@elodiewrites — When I need a break from food pics, I love to check out Elodie’s feed for a little fashion and lifestyle. She is a fashion writer and has a beautifully curated feed where she showcases herself, her family and her outfits in tasteful ways. She is also a gluten-free vegan — I don’t know how she does it!

@haticesmthng — Lastly, a non-vegan feed that I adore. Hatice has a great eye and a diversity of images that blend extremely well together.

What tips do you have for Concordia students who are looking to make their Instagram accounts better, or just take great photos?

  • Natural light is your best friend.
  • Try to develop a consistent visual style — consider sticking to one filter for all your photos.
  • Build connections with others who share similar interests.
  • Most importantly, don’t focus on becoming Instafamous — it’s overrated. Growing a following and garnering likes takes lots of time and effort. It might be worth investing the time if your profession demands it, but be careful. Instagram is a really fun and engaging tool but it is also a dangerous platform for mental health. Share things you love without worrying about likes.

Follow Melodie’s journey via the #CUseenby hashtag.
