1.  Join the circus

Running away won’t be necessary if you want to join the circus this week. The carnival spills onto the streets, sidewalks, plazas and parks during Montreal's very own circus festival. High-flying performances abound across all corners of the city as Montréal Complètement Cirque invites you to discover a host of free, fantastical, circus-related activities.

2. Visit Africa for the night

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique l Locations vary l Until July 22

Montreal comes alive with sounds from across the world this month as the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique kicks off for another year. From big names on the international scene to free shows featuring upcoming artists, this dynamic festival promises many a memorable evening.

P.S. From July 17 to 22, the Village des Nuits d’Afrique opens, welcoming visitors to enjoy an array of free shows and activities.

3. Enjoy worldly weekends

Week-ends du monde | Parc Jean Drapeau | July 14 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., July 15 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Travel the world without having to leave the comforts of Montreal with Week-ends du monde, a festival that shines a light on the different corners of our great globe. From Brazilian Carnival to China’s Jade Dragon Cultural Festival, this free outdoor celebration invites you to enjoy culturally diverse music, dance, food and merriment. It all comes to a head on July 15, when the festival screens the World Cup finale.

4. Check out the Land of the Rising Sun

Matsuri Japon | Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre of Montreal | August 11 2018

The 17th edition of Matsuri Japon invites Montrealers to discover the sights, sounds and tastes of Japan. Festival-goes can try origami, savour mouth-watering delicacies or take a stroll in a Yukata — a light cotton kimono. Free shows that incorporate dance, music and martial arts will also take place. In addition, traditional Japanese items and matsuri souvenirs will be on sale for anyone looking for that perfect keepsake.

5. Watch crime on the canal

Film Noir au Canal | Square Saint Patrick | Sundays from July 15 to August 19

Bring a blanket and your detective skills as classic crime thrillers take to the silver screen near Montreal’s Lachine Canal. Film Noir au Canal is a free, outdoor cinematic festival that draws Montrealers from all parts of the island. Who doesn’t love a little murder and intrigue at the end of a long week?
