Planning the next step in your academic career? Now's your chance to learn more about graduate studies at Concordia.

On October 28, Concordia is hosting its largest recruitment event of the year for prospective students. Open House is a great opportunity to meet with faculty members, visit the university’s facilities and learn more about the programs on offer.

Niem Huynh, manager of graduate recruitment, encourages interested students to take part in the day of activities. “It’s a great way to experience life as a student at Concordia,” she says.

“The decision to pursue graduate studies is a big one, and it’s an investment. It is important to meet with representatives from the departments, recruiters and current students to talk about this pivotal decision and to make an informed choice.”

A focus on the graduate experience

This year, several presentations at Open House will focus solely on the graduate experience.

One presentation — organized with YES Montreal, a community-based organization that helps young Quebecers find employment — will discuss the benefits of holding a master’s or PhD degree in today’s job landscape.

Another session, presented by Cynthia Raso, manager of graduate awards, will showcase the various scholarships, fellowships and conference funds available to students.

Huynh says that this year’s focus on the graduate experience came out of conversations with prospective students as well as feedback from current ones. “We learned that a few topics stand out in their minds when choosing their graduate school, such as the application process, funding their studies and preparing for a career,” she says.

“We wanted to address these big, common questions.”

Finding a good fit

Master's and PhD students need to ensure that the university they choose is a good fit, both in terms of research interests and professional goals.

Vivek Venkatesh, associate dean of graduate recruitment and awards, says responding to students’ questions is top of mind.

“Our team of recruitment professionals will be on hand to respond to student queries and to help them navigate diverse issues related to such things as funding, opportunities for professional development and curricular requirements,” he says.

For those who prefer to hear it first-hand, the School of Graduate Studies has organized a collaborative panel discussion in which current students will talk about their experience at Concordia.

Concordia’s Open House takes place on Saturday, October 28, on the Sir George Williams Campus (1515 Ste-Catherine W.) and Loyola Campus (7141 Sherbrooke Street W.). A free shuttle bus will connect visitors between the two campuses.
