The Board of Governors approves a number of new appointments and reappointments

At the last Board of Governors meeting of the academic year, board chair Norman Hébert, Jr. thanked the following outgoing governors for their contributions: Lucinda Marshall-Kiparissis and Terry Wilkings (alternate), representing undergraduate students; Rahul Kumar, representing graduate students; William Lynch, representing the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science; Fran Shaver and Theresa Bianco, representing the Faculty of Arts and Science.


President’s remarks

Concordia’s president Alan Shepard informed the Board that the university had advanced 30 spots in the 2018 World University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Concordia is now in the top 1.6 per cent of universities globally.

He thanked the Board members for participating in the recent convocation ceremonies. More than 5,400 students graduated, with more than 3,000 walking across the stage to collect their degrees.

The president also noted that a new controller has been appointed. Gracy Pardillo will join Concordia on August 7, and Sandra Gabriele will take on her new role as vice-provost of Innovation in Teaching and Learning on June 19.

Anne-Marie Croteau has started her term as the new dean of the John Molson School of Business, and Christophe Guy will assume his new role as vice-president of Research and Graduate Studies on August 1.


The Board welcomes new governors and approves reappointments

The following reappointments were approved by the Board, effective July 1, 2017:

  • Frédérica Martin, representing the administrative and support staff
  • Daniel Cross, representing the Faculty of Fine Arts
  • Françoise Bertand, Gina Cody and Michael Novak, representing the external community


Frédérica Martin and Françoise Bertrand were reappointed as Board vice-chairs, effective July 1, 2017. Jonathan Wener was reappointed as chancellor of the university for another three-year term beginning on September 1, 2017.

The Board also approved the following new appointments, effective July 1, 2017:

  • Chaim Kuhnreich, representing graduate students
  • Asma Mushtaq, representing undergraduate students
  • Ted Stathopoulos, representing the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science
  • Jarret Carty, representing the Faculty of Arts and Science


Per-credit tuition fees for undergraduate international students approved

Since September 2014, the Government of Quebec no longer regulates tuition fees for international students in certain programs. These are referred to as deregulated programs.

As a result, undergraduate students in the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (ENCS) Cycle I programs are charged a single per-credit rate. Concordia does not receive any teaching grant for these students.

The Board approved a recommendation from the Finance Committee for a 2.7 per cent fee increase for undergraduate international students in the following deregulated programs, effective in the fall 2017 term:

  • ENCS Cycle I: students will be charged a fixed rate of $673.93 per credit
  • JMSB Cycle I programs: students will be charged a fixed rate of $737.07 per credit


These increases are in alignment with the tuition fee increases set by the Government of Quebec for Quebec and international students in regulated programs.


Administrative fee approved

The Board approved a recommendation from the Finance Committee to increase the administrative fee charged to all students by 2.7 per cent.

Effective in the fall 2017 term, the fee will be $10.26 per credit for all students. The Government of Quebec approved this increase.


Technology fee approved

The Board also approved a recommendation from the Finance Committee to increase the technology infrastructure fee charged to all students by 2.7 per cent.

The funds generated from this fee are used to enhance certain technology services provided to students, as well as to provide training and support to students in the use of new technology. This includes the university’s wireless network and DPrint self-serve service for students.

Effective in the fall 2017 term, this fee will be $4.92 per credit for all students. The Government of Quebec approved this increase.
