Concordia’s Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) has done it again! For the fourth year in a row — from 2013 through to 2016 — software engineering researchers claimed top spot in the csrankings.org lineup of Canadian universities.

Based at UMass Amherst, csrankings.org ranks computer science departments around the world by assessing the number of faculty publications that appear in highly selective conferences in the field. This metrics-driven result demonstrates CSSE’s acceptance to competitive conferences, the calibre of its published research and, ultimately, the efforts of its faculty members.

The scope of the software engineering research being conducted at Concordia spans fields from mobile applications and software architecture to mining software repositories and analytics.

This work has applications in fields from preventive health and smart cities to artificial intelligence and information security.

According to the ranking, CSSE faculty members published an average of 3.5 articles in highly competitive conferences and journals. The result beats out other top Canadian universities, including UBC (3.3), McGill (2.3) and UofT (1.9).

Sudhir Mudur, CSSE chair, says that, “in addition to being the first university in Quebec to offer a PhD in software engineering, this recognition of the calibre of the faculty’s research sets us at the top of software engineering education. We must strive to keep up the momentum!”
