It’s mid-term: the time when belt-tightening goes from optional to imperative. The question is — how can you stay fit, eat well, slot in some fun and pay the rent?

From November 24 to 28, in honour of Financial Literacy Week, Concordia’s Student Services is offering a series of two workshops in eight sessions that provide practical tips for financial planning.

“Putting good financial habits into practice in everyday life sets you up for success not only as a student, but for the long term after you graduate,” says Stephanie Sarik, interim registrar and director of Financial Aid and Awards.

“In practical terms, this means simple changes to the way you shop, cook, consume, play and approach all aspects of your daily routines can make a big difference to managing your money wisely and being happy about living within your means.”

The workshops are a part of a national campaign sponsored by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) to promote “the knowledge, skill and confidence to make responsible financial decisions.”

During Financial Literacy Week at Concordia, an information kiosk will be set up in the EV Atrium in the Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Arts Integrated Complex, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the Sir George Williams Campus. Feel free to drop by to ask questions about money matters and pick up information on how to take control of your spending.

According to a 2008 FCAC report, only 22 per cent of young Canadians make a budget and stick to it.

“It is a real concern, because knowing how to budget is key to a great student experience — one where you can worry less about managing your finances in the future by controlling them in the present,” says Brad Tucker, associate vice-president of Student and Enrolment Services.

“The Student Services workshops will give you the tools to do just that.”
