To recognize Earth Day, Concordia’s David O’Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise (DOCSE) at the John Molson School of Business is holding a Facebook competition, titled Living Every Day Like it’s Earth Day around the theme of upcycling.

Upcycling is the process of turning waste products into new products of higher quality to protect the environment. DOCSE encourages people to post stories and images of objects they have repurposed or recycled.

“Some examples might be using old clothes to make a quilt or record vinyl shaped to become a bowl,” says David Lank, program coordinator at DOCSE. The contest prizes are an iPad mini, a $100 gift certificate to restaurant Crudessence and a one-year Bixi pass.

“Upcycling forces us to become more creative, hands-on, and most importantly, less wasteful,” says Andrew Ross, who is responsible for student and outreach activities at DOCSE. “Our culture is so accumstomed to throwing out everything after its initial use, when in reality most of these objects can be reused or recycled with different utilities.”

“We felt that a competition would get people to engage and co-create sustainable living,” says Ross. “Although Earth Day is a very special day, every day should be treated like it's Earth Day, and there are many different ways we can incorporate sustainaiblity into our daily lives, such as upcycling. The contest encourages practical solutions to living every day sustainably.”

While the contest has closed to submissions, the public can vote for favourite entries from April 16 to 21.
