Plugged in at the library
Computer users can be helpless without a good supply of electricity. This is the reasoning behind the Libraries’ latest upgrade to its study spaces – the addition of several hundred electrical outlets to ensure that virtually every library user has a place to plug in.
Since fall 2011, the electrical outlet project has seen the installation of about 1050 new duplex receptacles on library study furnishings throughout the Vanier and Webster Libraries – that’s 2100 plugs! – in addition to the several hundred that already existed. The project has taken about 4 months, with the Webster Library receiving the final touches now.
Virtually every study table and carrel has at least one outlet in a handy location, for one or more students.
The catalyst for this project was the CSU Library Services Fund. Acting on the advice of student library users, the fund committee gave this project high priority. Students can say goodbye to the days of extension cords and drained batteries. Outlets are always nearby, whether in a group study room, at a table, at a study carrel, or just relaxing in a comfy chair in the Webster lobby.
The receptacles have been placed in discrete locations to get the best balance between accessibility and aesthetics. On most study tables, the outlets are located just under the lip of the table top, on both sides of the table. On most study carrels in Webster Library, the outlets are located near the floor on the vertical panel shared by the neighbouring carrel.
