To mark the first anniversary of an earthquake that destroyed much of Haiti’s infrastructure and resources, a pair of campus events will allow Concordians to learn more about the rebuilding efforts and show their solidarity.

On January 20 at 6 p.m. Jean W. Pape will deliver an update on the situation for people living with HIV in Haiti, as part of the HIV/AIDS public lecture series.

Pape will present his organization’s struggle to respond, and take stock of the situation over the past year for those reliant on the HIV support of the NGO he founded.

Pape is Professor of Medicine at Cornell University, and Executive Director and founder of GHESKIO, an NGO based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which provides services to more than 100,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.

The lecture is free of charge and will be held in Room 110 of the Henry F. Hall Building (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd.W).

On January 21 at 7 p.m., Concordia's Haitian students’ association is holding a concert at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall (7141 Sherbrooke St.W.) to raise funds for the reconstruction of a preschool and a primary school in the city of Léogane, Haiti.

The student association, called the Ralliement Étudiant Haïti-Canada (REHC), is holding the concert with the support of the Dean of Students Office.

The concert features Haitian artists such as Melissa Dauphin, Toto and Pascal Laraque, La troupe Ekspresyon, Reginald Toussaint, Judes André Deslouches, Sanya, Whilemine Audate and Fedorah Mattieu.

It will be preceded by a reception for ticket holders.

Tickets are $25 each, $20 for students, and are available through the Admission network as well as at the Dean of Students Offices on both campuses: Room H-637, Henry F. Hall Building, Sir George Williams Campus (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd.W.) and Room AD-121, Administrative Building, Loyola Campus (7141 Sherbrooke St. W). Tickets can also be purchases at the REHC office, Room K-202, Sir George Williams Campus (2150 Bishop St).

The concert offers an opportunity to celebrate the community while supporting development projects in Haiti.
