The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery at Concordia is presenting a unique project that’s a Montreal first in dance and contemporary visual arts: Out of Grace.

Out of Grace brings together dancers, performers and five works of visual art expressly created for this project, which is at once an enacted choreography and an exhibition.

For the duration of the project, which debuted November 3, dancers will move, fall, roll, stop and start again across the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery.

Visitors can come in, walk through and between the performers, have tea, look at the works and observe dancers.

The project was conceived by Montreal choreographer Lynda Gaudreau, Director of the Compagnie de Brune, on the invitation of Ellen Gallery Director Michèle Thériault.

They sought to question the parameters of their respective disciplines, as well as the space of an art gallery, by creating a context for coexistence of their fields. The choreography, which unfolds under a designed soundtrack, is punctuated by lighting and momentary periods of darkness.

Out of Grace has provided a unique opportunity for interuniversity collaboration with the Ellen Gallery and one of Montreal’s most avant garde dance companies.

The dancers and performers include numerous interns from the Concordia Department of Contemporary Dance and the Université du Québec à Montréal dance program.

The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday, from noon to 6 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

Partners in innovation:

Out of Grace is coproduced by the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery and Compagnie de Brune with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts de Montréal and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
