The NFL deadline to trim rosters down to 53 players was Saturday, and Cory Greenwood, who played four years at middle linebacker for the Concordia Stingers, made the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2010 lineup.

Greenwood signed a free agent contract in the middle of May and started working out with approximately 110 Kansas City hopefuls. He survived three rounds of cuts to make the final active roster.

Greenwood, a Kingston, Ont. native, played all four preseason games for the Chiefs, earning respect for his special teams play.

He recorded five tackles in the preseason. Last week he raced down the field, tipped a punt and then put a tremendous block on Green Bay long snapper Brent Goode who had to leave the game.

Greenwood can expect to make at least $325,000 U.S. which is the NFL’s minimum salary for rookies.

In 2009, Greenwood’s final year at Concordia, the Human Environment major collected 62 total tackles in eight games to lead the Quebec University Football League in tackling. His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists ranked him fourth in the country. He also collected two sacks and forced a fumble.

He is one of hardest working athletes to ever wear the Stingers’ uniform. Greenwood is in superb physical condition and has earned a lot of respect for his devotion to training. At 235 pounds, he can do an amazing 24 reps at 225 pounds on bench press. Greenwood also has an exceptional vertical leap that is now at 40 inches. He runs a 4.50 40-yard dash.

In 2009, he was a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) first team all-Canadian and the Presidents Trophy recipient as the outstanding defensive player in Canada.

On May 2, he was selected third overall by the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League draft.

There is a long list of Stingers who have enjoyed the attention of NFL teams, including cornerback Mark Montreuil who was drafted in the seventh round by the San Diego in 1995. He went on to play three years.

Concordia has had seven players attend NFL camps:

  • Mark Montreuil – San Diego 1995
  • Denis Montana – Houston 1996, New England, Miami
  • Sylvain Girard – Cleveland 1999
  • Burke Dales – Pittsburgh 2002
  • Sam Taulealea – Dallas 2006
  • Kristian Matte – Houston 2010
  • Cory Greenwood – Kansas City 2010
