Threats to Irish Memorial Park

Members of Montreal’s Irish community are concerned about the sale to Hydro-Québec of land that has been earmarked for a memorial park to commemorate the deaths of 6,000 immigrants at the time of the Great Famine of 1847. A commemorative stone, commonly referred to as the Black Rock, currently stands on a site near the Victoria bridge where most of the dead were interred.  Plans to develop a more fitting memorial park have received the support of Montreal mayor Denis Coderre and Liberal MPs. With the annual Walk to the Stone set for May 28, Coderre is now promising to come up with a solution to ensure the community’s dream is preserved. Michael Kenneally, principal of Concordia’s School of Irish Studies, can address the project’s history and its importance to Irish people around the world.
