This year’s rallying event is being held while a Senate committee pursues public hearings into Bill C-16, the legislation that calls for the rights of transgender people to be included in the Charter of Rights. Kimberley Manning, principal of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute is a founder of Gender Creative Kids Canada and the mother of an 11 year-old transgender child. Manning testified in favour of the adoption of Bill C-16 saying, “We want the Senate to pass Bill C-16 as an expression of its commitment to protect one of the most vulnerable populations in Canada: transgender children and young people.”
