March 25 marks Tolkien Reading Day. Stephen Yeager, associate professor in the department of English, can describe how Tolkien’s work has been appropriated outside of the literary world and has transformed into a cultural phenomenon.  According to Yeager, “Tolkien’s stories are only the beginning of his project: his novels are just one chapter in the scholarly history of an imagined world, complete with appendices. Other people have built worlds before and since, but few have had the scholarly chops to build so convincingly.”
