Every year, the Hnatyshyn Foundation awards generous Developing Artist Grants in classical music, theatre, and dance to seven young artists across Canada.

This year, Maureen Adelson of  Montreal, Quebec, is the winner of the grant for Acting – English Theatre. Maureen is currently in her third year of study in the BFA Specialization Acting for Theatre here at Concordia University.

I want to be true to myself as an artist and never settle for roles that go against my values. I want to show that Black actresses can portray more than the stereotypical girlfriend of a gangster.  Women like Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson inspire me greatly because they have paved the way for many young Black actors to pursue their artistic dreams.
