September 15, 2017: Invited Speaker Seminar: Implementing Network Security: From Security Objectives to Products Selection

Abstract

When designing and ultimately implementing security, practitioners rely on key security building blocks in order to reduce risk to an acceptable level. Whether the security objectives are prevention, detection or reaction, the security functions have to be carefully selected in order to provide the appropriate level of protection without impacting the functionality or services provided by the system. This implementation has become a challenging exercise. Furthermore, security functions have developed together with the growth of the Internet and of networks in general, resulting in a large, complex and fast evolving security market. Security solutions are packaged depending on the components they intend to protect. So they are inevitably based on assumptions on the architecture and usage of networks which ultimately change over time. Using as an example the Nokia Netguard Security portfolio, this talk will focus on three key areas: end user and end point traffic protection, core traffic protection and security management. Finally, we will illustrate how the recently adopted Security Operations Analytics and Response (SOAR) approach can significantly improve security operations in the field.

Biography

Dr. François Cosquer is currently CTO Security for Applications and Analytics at Nokia with particular focus on NFV security. In close collaboration with elite customers, his responsibilities cover defining guidelines and best practices for end to end solutions including supporting security R&D lifecycle from security requirements to security testing and validation. He also supports audits, incidents response and root cause analysis activities. In collaboration with Bell Labs research he develops technical direction, provides design and architecture expertise to end to end solutions. François graduated in Electronics and Computing and holds an MSc in Computer Science and a PhD in Computer Engineering. He currently serves as Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Concordia University, Montreal.
