CIISE Distinguished Seminar: Current EU Trends in Cyber Attack Protection

Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering

Dr. Joaquin Garcia-Alfaro, Telecom SudParis, Institut Mines-Telecom, France

Date: Jan. 24 (4:00 pm)
Location: EV3.309

Abstract

Cyber attacks have been evolving from small dangers to large scale threats.  They can target a vast number of Internet resources, including assets from private companies, government networks and critical infrastructures. The associated costs keep increasing annually, especially in terms of loss of business opportunities and the expense of fixing the incidents. The problem is expected to become more severe in the coming years. Like many other affected organizations, the European Commission, as the executive body of the European Union, has notably increased its budget to support research on cyber security. The goal is to develop innovative technologies to tackle cyber criminals activities, as well as new ways of handling malware and botnet actions. This talk will report on some EU-funded projects addressing such challenges. The talk will touch upon aspects of incident detection, data visualization and mitigation. Challenges for future work will also be addressed.
