Title:  Mining Developer Interaction Data

Date: Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Time: 13:00

Room: EV002.184

ABSTRACT

Developers’ daily work produces, transforms, and communicates cross-cutting information across applications (e.g. IDEs, emails, Q&A sites, and Twitter), which causes the problem of information fragmentation. To tackle this problem, we developed a tool named ActivitySpace, which automatically collects and analyzes developer interaction data. With this tool, we surprisingly found that it can be used to solve various software engineering problems.  In this talk, I will present three studies based on  ActivitySpace, including: (1) inferring developer activities; (2) measuring time spent on program comprehension activities; and (3) building an interactive programming video tutorial authoring and watching system. I will also highlight future applications based on ActivitySpace.

BIO

Xin Xia is a lecturer (equivalent to U.S. assistant professor) at the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, Australia. Prior to joining Monash University, he was a post-doctoral research fellow in the software practices lab at the University of British Columbia in Canada, and a research assistant professor at Zhejiang University in China. Xin received both of his Ph.D and bachelor degrees in computer science and software engineering from Zhejiang University in 2014 and 2009, respectively. To help developers improve their productivity, his current research focuses on mining and analysing rich data in software repositories to uncover interesting and actionable information. He has employed and customized structured and unstructured data analytics techniques – including data mining, information retrieval, natural language processing, search-based algorithms, and program analysis – to transform passive software engineering data into automated tools and new insights.  Xin has published 101 papers with 99 different co-authors, including 5 TSE, 9 EMSE, 3 ASE, and 5 ICSME papers. Some of his papers won best/distinguished paper awards, e.g., ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award in ICPC 2018, FOSS Impact Paper Award in MSR 2018.
