The journal, Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing (CSSP) has made huge stride forwards in the quality and quantity of articles it publishes under editor-in-chief, M.N.S. Swamy, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In recognition of Swamy's contributions as editor since 1999, the journal has established the M.N.S. Swamy Best Paper Award, which will be awarded to the best paper published in journal every two years.
A multidisciplinary team of Concordia students has brought back a bronze medal from the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) North American Jamboree. The competition, held at the University of Toronto, October 4 to 6, attracted some of the best universities in Canada and the United States. Concordia's team, comprised of students in biology and computer engineering, was participating for the first time in the competition. The students designed biological cells capable of computation.
A student team had a strong performance at HackMit, Oct 5 to 6, hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Their contest entry, Pebble Go, allows for users to navigate a city using Google maps, which beams through information via an Android device to a wristwatch. The team was comprised of students Ramez Debbas, Scott Goldwater, and Amine Mhedhbi. Thanks to this performance, Concordia is now ranked 19th out of 110 universities across North America for its participation in "Major League Hacking."
Space Concordia has finished fourth out of ten universities in the design phase of the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge with its contest entry, ConSat-2. This has galvanized the team to continue working hard on their satellite with the goal of victory in the final adjudication next spring. ConSat-2's research mission is to study the effects of space on self-healing materials.
