Learn about Space Concordia's ConSat-2

After their victory in the 2012 Canadian Satellite Design Challenge, Space Concordia, the student-run astronautical association, re-grouped and decided to form a brand new team to enter the next edition of the competition. Work began on Con-Sat-2 in October 2012. Just as in the inaugural competition, if Space Concordia is victorious a second time, the prize will be a full-scale launch into space to conduct research.

This time around, the students are working closely with Suong Hoa, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and one of the world's leading experts on composite materials. The students' plan is to conduct tests in space on self-healing materials--this is material that is able to repair damage caused by micrometeorite impacts.

Currently, the ConSat-2 team comprises 12 core members working on the project every week and an additional 12 members who contribute in a consultative and advisory role. They must ready the satellite for the rigorous testing and adjudication by judges from the Canadian Space Agency and MDA--the latter being one of the leading satellite manufacturing companies in the world. The competition results will be announced in May 2014.
