MEDIA PHILOSOPHY, VIDEO ART & STORIES FROM THE CATACLYSM

Seemingly everywhere, the high energy of predatory capitalism and the world-flattening speed of digital globalization have brought to the surface ghostly remainders of a past which is now suddenly the future: nativism, nationalist rivalries, ethnic grievances, long- suppressed religious visions, and long-neglected class inequities. Here, Nietzsche’s aphorism “Let the dead bury the living” finds its fulfillment in a form of 21st century politics and society that literally tries to wall itself off from the gathering storm with its spectacles

of terrorism, resurgent white nationalism, and the politics of rage. All the while, digital capitalism preps for the real world of clones, drones and androids while those excluded, prohibited and disavowed— refugees, seekers of asylum and nomadic flows of the dispossessed—are forced to gather together on ships

of despair, islands of sorrow and flights of desperation. So then, some stories from the gathering storm:  some theoretical, some by video art, and others by media philosophy from the violent edges.
