Announcements

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has approved a grant application put together by Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication, the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) and the Centre for International Governance Innovation to host an event in Ottawa on Dec. 1-3, 2017 – Media and Mass Atrocity: the Rwanda Genocide and BeyondThis event aims to build an international network concerning the issue of media and mass atrocity, to bring together experts and young scholars and to produce a digital platform and major publication to uphold the engagement of the research community.
 
The Robert Bosch Foundation in Germany has made a generous contribution to MIGS to support the upcomingMilan Forum for Parliamentary Action in Preventing Violent Extremism and Mass Atrocities, which will take place in Milan, Italy from 27-28 November, in partnership with Parliamentarians for Global Action and the Stanley Foundation.

MIGS hosted a round-table discussion on the crisis in Venezuela with the former Canadian Ambassador to the country, Ben Rowswell.

The German Consul General, Dr. Markus Lang visited MIGS to be briefed about the Institute’s work in Germany and abroad.

MIGS met with the representatives of the City of Dakar in an exchange of ideas with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, the Service de la Police de la Ville de Montréal and the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime.

Daniel Hooton, Project Coordinator for the Institute for Strategic Dialogue’s Strong Cities Network visited MIGS to discuss the role of cities in countering violent extremism.

MIGS, in partnership with the Canadian All-Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and other Crimes against Humanity and MP Ali Ehsassi, held a reception in Ottawa to honor the legacy of the late Warren Allmand (1932-2016). Speakers included the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, Alex Neve of Amnesty International Canada and former MP Marlene Jennings.

Nicolai Pogadl participated in the Security Intelligence and Surveillance in the Big Data Age workshop at the University of Ottawa, where he talked to leading academic and civil society experts and regulators, to consider questions of security intelligence, surveillance, privacy and human rights in the ‘Big Data Age’.

MIGS Latin America Fellow Andrei Serbin Pont was a speaker in the Investments in Prevention and Resilience Panel at the Positive Peace Conference in Stanford, California.

MIGS Digital Fellow Dr. André Gagné co-hosted Dr. Martin Geoffroy, from the Cégep Edouard-Montpetit and Director of the Centre d'expertise et de formation sur les intégrismes religieux et la radicalisation (CEFIR), who gave a lecture about the various approaches used in research on radicalisation.

MIGS, in partnership with Burma Task Force Canada will hold an event titled, “Rohingya in Peril: Crisis in Myanmar”, featuring renowned scholar and human rights activist Dr. Maung Zarni. Dr. Zarni, a non-resident fellow with the (Genocide) Documentation Center in Cambodia and leading human rights advocate on behalf of the Rohingya for three decades. The event location and time will soon be published on MIGS’ website.

November 22, 2017
The Centre d’etudes et des recherches internationales (CÉRIUM) at the Universite de Montreal, in partnership with MIGS, will hold a roundtable entitled “What is Genocide?” on November 22, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Marie Lamensch will moderate a discussion between historian and political scientist, Jacques Sémelin and lawyer and human rights expert Fannie Lafontaine.

October 16, 2017

MIGS joined 390 other organizations across 98 countries in signing an open letter sent to all UN member states ahead of the Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security on October 27, 2017. The Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security open letter called to boost efforts towards gender equality and women’s rights, and increase support for women civil society organizations and women human rights defenders. Phil Gurski was featured on a segment for CBC’s The Current, titled, “Extremist group al-Shabab likely behind Somalia bombing, predicts terror expert”.
