Announcement

The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), Concordia University’s Department of Political Science and the IEIM at UQAM (and other partners) will welcome the Global Diplomacy Lab (GDL) to Montreal in November 2016. The GDL is an initiative of the German Federal Foreign Office, the BMW Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Stiftung Mercator that serves as a platform for a new and more inclusive diplomacy that goes beyond traditional politics. More than fifty members of the GDL network will assemble to discuss the theme “Global Diplomacy in the Digital Age: Decoding How Technology is Transforming International Relations”.

May 8, 2016

MIGS will co-organize Montreal’s annual March for Humanity and the Prevention of Genocide alongside the Alliance for Genocide Awareness and Remembrance and the City of Montreal. The March raises awareness about crimes against humanity to prevent future mass atrocity crimes.



May 4-6, 2016

In partnership with Concordia University’s Loyola Sustainability Research Centre, MIGS will help organize the conference, Avoiding Catastrophe: Linking Armed Conflict, Harm to Ecosystems, and Threats to Public Health. This conference is made possible through partnerships with EcoHealth Alliance, FutureEarth, and the Human Security Institute and is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

MIGS will host a workshop discussion of the lessons learned during the Canadian Forces contribution to the humanitarian mission in Nepal. Lieutenant-Colonel Simon Comtois will speak about his experience deploying with the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and Operation RENAISSANCE 15-1. Please note that registration is mandatory; you can register here.

MIGS Staff attended the Raoul Wallenberg lecture at McGill University. Speakers Irwin Cotler and Harold Hongju Kho discussed the Syria Crisis and the Responsibility to Protect, as well as the legacy of Raoul Wallenberg.

MIGS hosted Anthony Housefather, Member of Parliament for Mount Royal and chair of the Canadian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, to discuss the work of the Institute.

MIGS hosted a meeting with the Canadian Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Kent Hehr, veterans and members of the Concordia University Veterans Association,Concordia University’s President Alan Shepard, Representatives of the RCMP Veterans Association, former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and Concordia guests.

MIGS Deputy Director Kyle Matthews participated in the 47th United Nations Issues Conference, sponsored by the Stanley Foundation in New York. The conference theme was “Developing a Global Mechanism for Atrocity Forecasting and Prevention”.
