Tenure-track position in visual journalism and data negotiation

The Department of Journalism at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in VISUAL JOURNALISM AND DATA NEGOTIATION.

We are seeking a practitioner-teacher-scholar with a specialization in visual journalism. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine contemporary approaches to visual journalism storytelling and reporting with new methods in how visual data are sought, negotiated with sources, and presented.

The ideal candidate will have strong professional visual journalism credentials, the ability to develop and teach visual journalism classes, competencies with a range of digital journalism platforms and tools (visual, web, mobile and social media), provide evidence of an evolving program of research or professional outputs in journalism studies, and be driven to be a leader in the field of visual journalism while contributing to the academic and administrative life of the Department.

The Department of Journalism has been at the forefront of training skilled journalists who think critically about the profession and society for 40 years. The faculty and staff are committed to serving the profession by training skilled, thinking journalists and by producing scholarship, criticism, and commentary on journalism. Our graduates are nationally recognized journalists striving to fight injustice in a world awash with misinformation. They are known for their intelligence and rigour. We offer four programs: a three-year undergraduate program, two one-year graduate diplomas, and a two-year MA in Digital Innovation in Journalism Studies. QUALIFICATIONS

All applicants must possess strong professional and contemporary visual journalism credentials. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of an evolving program of research or professional outputs in journalism studies. Preference will be given to candidates with a M.A. or PhD in a relevant field and those that can demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointed candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate, diploma and MA levels, to engage in research or research-creation including active scholarly or professional publication, and to contribute through service to the life and reputation of the Department, the University and wider community.

  • a statement of teaching philosophy;
  • samples of recent publications;
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness (teaching evaluations; syllabi; samples of student work);
  • Names and contact information of three referees. Candidates who are shortlisted will be asked to submit letters of reference and should alert referees of this potential need.

Subject to budgetary approval, the position will begin August 1, 2018, and will normally be at the Assistant Professor level.
