Dr. Bergholz has just won a fourth major prize for his 2016 book, Violence as a Generative Force: Identity, Nationalism, and Memory in a Balkan Community (Cornell UP). This is the prestigious European Studies Book Award from the Council for European Studies at Columbia University, given out biannually for the best book in European studies (any discipline) by a first-time author, which in this case included books published during 2016 and 2017.  The competition is open to scholars anywhere in the world and widely considered as among the most prestigious international book awards for young scholars in European studies.  This is the first time that a scholar based in Canada has won this award, which will be presented during the 2019 International Conference of Europeanists, which will be held in Madrid from June 20-22.
